This is basically a VERY good budget version of the Leatherman Surge, which IMHO is the best full-size multi-tool on the market. Now, make no mistake - it definitely falls short of the Surge in lots of little ways. The tools themselves all feel high-quality, functional, and well-designed... however, the way in which they fit/work together is where you notice the very minor shortfalls. It's quite stiff to open/close at first - not a bad thing, as it will definitely loosen up with use. The machining is definitely a little less precise, which I notice most in the small in-handle tools (can opener, etc.) and in the scissor springbar (more on that later). It's mostly noticeable in how the tool lock... on the Surge, simply open the tools completely and they'll lock without hesitation. On this tool, I have to give them an extra little push/tap in order to activate the locking mechanism. Again, this might become less of an issue as the tool wears a bit, and the tolerances get a bit looser. The MOST noticeable little quirk has to do with the scissor springbar (pictures above). At first, I thought my tool was defective, since the scissors wouldn't lock when opened. However, I figured it out quickly - once opened, you need to push the scissor springbar a little to the right in order to line up the locking mechanism properly, while pushing the scissors to the left. This is kind of stiff at first, but after 10 mins of use it's already becoming more fluid. And the scissors are GREAT! One design feature I actually VASTLY PREFER over the Leatherman Surge is the bit driver. Leatherman uses their proprietary flat-hex driver/bits, which save space/weight but IMHO are less useful, harder to replace, and more expensive than traditional full-size hex bits. This tool has a full-size standard hex bit driver, and you can use any standard 6mm hex bit with it. They had to move the can opener into the other handle to compensate for the girthy bit driver, but that works fine for me. The included bit selection is also well-chosen. AWESOME! As of right now, I can say that this tool offers tool functionality that is on-par or BETTER than the Leatherman Surge, given the full-size bit driver. The assembly/machining feels to me around 85% of Leatherman quality, which will probably improve as it wears in. Durability remains to be seen, but given the sturdy feel, it's probably not far off the Surge. But here's the thing... this tool includes a ton of accessories (wood saw bits, driver bits, wire cutter replacements, adjustment key, nice sheath), and sells for less than 1/4 of the Surge's price. Any minor concerns I have are completely mitigated by the incredible value:money ratio. If you want the absolute best full-size multi-tool on the market, something that is a sheer joy to use right out of the box, and money is no object, get the Leatherman Surge. If you just want a REALLY GOOD full-size multi-tool that offers the same (or slightly better) functionality with a few very minor compromises in aesthetics/assembly, get this one. For a song.
